Music Scholarships

The ideal Music Scholar

We seek passionate and dedicated musicians who demonstrate a genuine love for making music. Developing musical skills requires time, patience, and self-discipline, and we are looking for young musicians who possess this drive and determination. We want to hear about your musical journey—why music is important to you, what motivates you to excel, and who or what inspires you as a musician.

Benefits

Music Scholars receive free tuition on up to two instruments. In addition, they benefit from close mentorship and guidance from our experienced music staff. Scholars will have regular opportunities to perform in both formal and informal concerts, and are expected to attend a range of enriching musical events as part of the Music Scholars Programme (including performances at venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, Steinway Hall, and the Royal Opera House). Additionally, Scholars will receive coaching in Music Theory from a departmental staff member.

The Scholarship does not carry automatic fee reduction. Where appropriate, scholars may benefit from fee remission in the form of a means-tested bursary. Applications for bursaries may be submitted alongside the scholarship application.

Expectations

Music Scholars are expected to contribute actively to the musical life of the College. This includes participation in instrumental and vocal ensembles, as well as taking advantage of opportunities for solo performances. Scholars will also be required to participate in large-scale College events, such as shows, reviews, and recordings.

Holders of Music Scholarships are strongly encouraged to pursue the subject at GCSE and A Level.

Auditions

Applicants for a Music Scholarship will attend an audition at the College. We aim to make the audition process relaxed and welcoming, providing students the opportunity to showcase their musical and technical abilities. The audition will contain the following:

  • Main instrument/voice: Perform two contrasting pieces.
  • Second instrument/voice: Perform one piece.
  • Aural tests: Respond to rhythm and pitch exercises.
  • Viva voce: A conversation where the applicant shares their musical journey, aspirations, and influences.

Candidates are encouraged to bring to the audition a portfolio of evidence (certificates, a list of recent performances, compositions, etc.) to support their application.
