At the recent European Rowing Championships in Szeged, Hungary, Team GB celebrated another triumph on the water. Among the victorious athletes was Frankie, a former student of Pangbourne College, whose journey from school rowing to international gold is nothing short of inspiring.
Frankie’s Rowing Journey
Frankie’s first contact with rowing began at the age of 12, on the river at Henley-On-Thames. Guided by her uncle, she navigated the currents in a single called ‘Tinkerbelle’, setting the stage for a remarkable journey ahead.
It was at Pangbourne College where Frankie further developed her skills, discovering her passion for the sport and laying the foundations for her future success. Her coach at the College, Richard Follett, recalls Frankie’s time in the Senior Squad: ‘Frankie was an ever-present at training, always pushing herself and the others in her crews with a quiet determination. They were particularly close as a group and despite the pressures of hard work both in the classroom and on the water, Frankie always had a smile on her face. Competing in the regular rowing crews at events, one would never know the physical challenges she faced to perform at the top level, which even led to her attending GB Junior Rowing trials and racing twice in the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, USA. Her love of the sport and determination to succeed set her up for a golden future and we are immensely proud of all she has achieved so far.’
Continuing her academic and athletic pursuits, Frankie joined Oxford Brookes University to study physiotherapy. Balancing the rigours of university life with rowing, she embarked on a journey of self-discovery and athletic excellence.
Discovery of Para-Rowing
Despite being born with Erb's Palsy, a condition affecting the movement and feeling in her arm, Frankie's determination didn’t stop her joining the GB Para Rowing Team in 2022. Frankie wasted no time in making her mark on the international stage. In her debut season, she secured double World Championship titles.
Together with her crewmates, Frankie embarked on a dominance journey, remaining unbeaten in major championships since 2011 and, despite the high pressure, she thrived on the challenge, pushing herself and her team to new heights.
European Triumph
At the recent European Rowing Championships, Frankie and her crewmates once again showcased their prowess, claiming gold amidst challenging conditions. Their victory further solidified Great Britain's status as a powerhouse in the world of rowing. Frankie's journey from Pangbourne College to international gold exemplifies the power of perseverance and dedication. Her story serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit of athletes who refuse to be defined by their limitations. As she continues to inspire others with her achievements, Frankie's legacy in the world of rowing is sure to endure for years to come.
