Stepping down after 19 years of Headship, Thomas Garnier leaves an outstanding legacy at Pangbourne College. Under Thomas’s leadership, Pangbourne has evolved into the warm, friendly community it is today. He introduced the Flag Values in 2006, a strategic initiative that has defined the school’s ethos and aspirations. These values have been instrumental in shaping the personal development of students.
A former Royal Naval Officer, Thomas had a natural affinity with our ceremonial traditions. He set high standards and appreciated the unique benefits that our traditions bring to students and the wider community. His tenure saw memorable occasions, including two visits from the late Queen, marking the 25th anniversary of the Falklands Chapel in 2007 and the school’s centenary in 2017. Thomas’ wife, Alex, supported him on all of these occassions. Alex was also involved in supporting many aspects of College life and with her superb photography skills, captured many College events beautifully.
During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, Thomas’s strong and compassionate leadership shone through. Pangbourne adapted quickly, offering online lessons from day one, setting the school apart from others.
Thomas has been an outstanding role model, embodying the Flag Values. From his immaculate appearance to his kindness and respect for all, he has set a high bar for students to emulate. His diverse talents have seen him participating in the school’s co-curricular life, whether singing in the choir, coaching rowing, or leading a watercolour painting workshop on Wellbeing Day.
Meanwhile, Alex’s visionary work establishing our esteemed Piano Festival, now in its 12th year. With the establishment of Pangbourne College as an All Steinway School in 2012 (following the creation of the new music school), Alex and Thomas wanted these wonderful instruments to be enjoyed by as many young people as possible. The Piano Festival has inspired more than a thousand young musicians and will contibue to do so.
The dedicated contributions of Thomas and Alex have significantly shaped the school, and, as they move on to the next chapter of their lives, they carry with them the gratitude and best wishes of the entire Pangbourne College community.
