We are delighted to announce the launch of our A Level Tudor Symposium, to be held at Pangbourne College on Thursday, 20 March 2025.
Aimed squarely at existing Year 13 students revising for their summer exams, the day promises to be both engaging and absorbing, enriching and expanding students’ knowledge and understanding of the period as part of the revision process. We have lined up a fantastic range of speakers who will be able to bring various aspects of the period to life and give attending students a deeper and more sophisticated appreciation of the key debates and features of the Tudor age.
The day itself will comprise a series of four lectures spanning Henry VII and the dawn of the Tudor Age, Henry VIII and his foreign policy, with particular reference to his flagship the Mary Rose, the agrarian economy through the experiences of local Newbury clothier John Winchcombe (with reference to the Dissolution of the Monasteries), and the Elizabethan age of expansion. Speakers include Professor Steven Gunn (Merton College, Oxford), Dr Dominic Fontana (diver from the Mary Rose Project), David Peacock and Dr Richard Blakemore (Univ. of Reading). In addition to the speakers, AQA and OCR will have representatives in attendance and who will be available to speak with. The day will run from 10:00-16:00, with the first lecture scheduled to start at 10:30.
The cost is £50/school which will include morning and afternoon refreshments. Delegates should bring their own packed lunch (or pre-order a packed lunch from us). Pangbourne College is conveniently located three miles from Jct. 12 of the M4 for those travelling by car/minibus/coach. Plentiful parking is available. For those looking to travel by train, Pangbourne is 10 minutes from Reading. We will look to arrange transport from the station to the College for those that need it.
