By Miss Amy Ellerington, Head of Modern Languages
Every year on 26 September we celebrate European Day of Languages. This year, we launched a Divisional competition in which each Division, including Dunbar (Years 7 & 8), was assigned a European country. The challenge was to prepare a typical sweet or savoury dish from that country.
The list of countries were Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland. In last Friday’s assembly the countries were allocated as follows:
- Port Jackson – Austria
- Illawarra – Belgium
- Hesperus – France
- Dunbar – Germany
- St. George– Italy
- Macquarie – Spain
- Harbinger – Switzerland
The final dishes were presented on the evening of Tuesday 26 September in the café. A panel including Miss Cruwys, Mrs Greenwood, and I (Miss Ellerington) judged each dish on its authenticity, taste, and presentation. We were impressed with all the entries and equally impressed with those who presented their dishes in the language of their country. But the overall winner was Dunbar! Many congratulations to them and thank you to everyone who took part.
