Given the College’s long-standing history with the Royal Family, our English department decided to embark on a project which adapted Fortnum and Mason’s The Platinum Pudding Competition.
In January this year, Fortnum and Mason tasked the public with creating a pudding quite literally fit for a Queen. The winning entry “will be an important part of the celebrations marking Her Majesty’s 70 years as Monarch” and will be served as part of the Platinum Jubilee banquet.
English teachers, Dr Clare Harraway and Mrs Rosemarie Seccombe-Wade, presented Year 7 pupils with the alternative idea of an internal College competition. Pupils were asked to design a pudding, and whilst they did not have to make the treat itself, it did offer them a chance to improve their presentation skills.
The judging panel was made up of Head of Catering, Mr Iain Headley and Sportsperson in Residence, Mr Cameron McDade. The competition was fierce and there was no shortage of impressive and tasty creations. Some pupils even took it a step further and actually made their designs - which we’re sure Mr Headley and Mr McDade were very happy about!
What was particularly striking were the stories behind each of the puddings. Many of them held sentimental value to the pupils. One of the pupils and her family often refer to their own grandmother as the Queen! From a chocolate cheesecake with raspberries from Scotland, to a royal trifle, to a cake in the shape of a crown, to a Battenberg cake with a Platinum Jubilee theme - the choice was inspiring!
After much deliberation, the judging panel finally decided that the overall winner was Maisie with her Battenberg cake. Well done, Maisie! Next term, Maisie will have the chance to bring her design to life with a member of our Catering team, Emma.
A huge well done to all of Year 7 for taking part and producing some incredibly creative ideas! For more #PangCollYear7 stories click here.
