In the final assembly of the Lent Term, the Headmaster praised pupils for the way in which they had engaged with their studies during a challenging term, which included nine weeks of remote learning.
Academic distinction prizes were awarded to 39 pupils in Form 1 to Upper Sixth by Deputy Head Academic, Mrs Samantha Greenwood. These prizes were awarded for gaining a large number of merits in a variety of subjects and for excellent work produced.
For the Inter-Division Academic Cup, known as the Headmaster’s Cup, this term’s winner was St George. In third place was Hesperus, just ahead of Harbinger, and in second place was Illawarra. Poppy in the Upper Sixth received the cup on behalf of St George.
The Director of Music, Mr Chris McDade, announced the following music exam results: Rock School (Drums) - Josh (Form 5, Grade 2, Merit), Oscar (Form 5, Grade 4, Distinction), and George (Form 5, Grade 4, Distinction); ABRSM - Lucia (Upper Sixth, Grade 8, merit, piano) and (Grade 8, distinction, flute). Mr McDade praised Lucia for achieving 136/150, one of the highest marks nationally in this examination session. A fantastic achievement!
Miss Rhiannon Bland, Assistant Head of Drama, congratulated Oliver, Form 4, on his ‘Trinity Talent Class of 2020 Artistic Achievement Award’. He beat 109 other nominees nationally as a result of being awarded an exceptional Distinction (93/100) for his Grade 6 Acting Solo exam.
In a closely fought girls’ inter-division netball competition, Mr Sam Hewick, Director of Sport, announced that St George had narrowly beaten Illawarra. In the boys’ inter-division hockey competition, Hesperus had beaten the other three divisions.
In addition to all the points gained in the Michaelmas Term and the inter-division strava competition, he said that for the girls there were only three points separating the two divisions, but St George retained the Girls’ Div Sports Cup for the Lent Term. In the Michaelmas Term, Hesperus shared the Boys’ Div Sports Cup with Macquarie, but Mr Hewick said that this term Hesperus shared the Cup with Harbinger. There is all to play for next term!
Mr Hewick explained that full school colours are awarded for exceptional attitude, commitment and performance within College first teams over two to three years in their sport, whilst also showing outstanding leadership in their sport and around the College. This term, six full school colours were awarded in girls’ hockey to six members of the Upper Sixth: Elise (captain), Alannah, Emily, Josie, Lara, and Nell. In boys’ rugby, full school colours were awarded to three members of the Upper Sixth: Calum (captain), Spencer (vice captain), and Dillan.
Finally, Flag Awards were given to 12 individuals across the year groups who had been nominated by either a member of staff or a student and who had displayed one, some or all of the school Flag Values: moral courage, kindness, industry, initiative, selflessness, resilience and integrity. The twelve included: Layza, Lucia, Ella, Alice, Isaac, Dan, Megan, Eva, a joint one to Jack and Archie, Johnson, and Evie. An on-the-spot flag award was also given by the Headmaster to Charlotte for her inspirational talk during the assembly about raising money for Beat and how she had achieved it through her daily 5k runs in February.
The Headmaster said that although it was sad to see everyone going home after just three weeks in school, he was fully aware of the need for a rest. In the Easter holiday, he encouraged pupils not only to rest, but to do something creative either for themselves or for others.
He also recommended that pupils returned to their academic notes before the end of the holiday to ensure they consolidated their knowledge of the Lent Term. Finally, he reminded everyone to keep lateral flow testing and reporting twice a week, so as to ensure that everyone could return with confidence to school next term.
Next term, the Headmaster said that the astroturf would be replaced, and during the holiday a project will commence to lay new cabling to enhance the IT provision in the College.
